Glow, at 96/4-5 Soi 23 Sukhumvit Road, is the place for house music in Bangkok. This relatively small club, with a dance floor that can fit about 50 clubbers in at any one time, is one of the few places ‘keeping it real’ in terms of the music. A lot of the larger clubs in Bangkok tend to focus on popular music. Glow offers a European style clubbing experience. On its website Glow describes itself as ‘The only REAL underground club’ in Bangkok. Big claim, but they can back it up.
If you, or your taxi driver, doesn’t know where they are going Glow can be a little difficult to find. Soi 23, or Soi Prasanmit as it is also known, isn’t one straight road – it has five different parts. Kind of confusing. The nearest BTS (skytrain) station is Asok and the nearest MRT (metro) station is Sukhumvit. It won’t take you more than 10 minutes to walk to the club from there if you go the right way. The simplest route to follow is to walk up the Sukhumvit Road until you get to the turning for Soi 23. Turn left into Soi 23, then take the first fork to the right, and then the first fork to the left. Glow is about 50 metres on the left from there. The Admiral Premier Hotel is a further 50 metres on from Glow on the right. If you pass the Admiral Premier Hotel you have gone too far.
Glow is open Monday to Saturday from 19.00. The music gets going at 22.00 The closing time appears to be a moveable feast. Don’t count on carrying on beyond 01.00 or 02.00 though as Bangkok has some strict licensing laws. Whether the fun carries on beyond that depends on how many people are there and whether the ‘party poopers’ in uniform turn up. Enough said.
Bar and Lounge
Glow is a bar/lounge as well as a club. From 19.00 you can go in there for a quietish drink. The club has been really nicely designed and furnished with hand made bar stools, long sofas and sofa beds. The term ‘Glow’ refers to the lighting effect: there is lighting under the tables and the bar which are all made of acrylic, creating a glowing effect. Pretty stylish. You could take a hot date there for pre-dinner drinks.
The nights are constantly changing. There tend to be weekly events Monday to Thursday, with a changing line up on Friday and Saturday. The busiest nights are Friday and Saturday nights when people living and working in Bangkok get the chances to let their hair down for an evening.
Music at Glow
Let me give you a recent Monday to Thursday schedule as an example of what you can expect:
- Mondays – Deep House with DJ Halem Q (free entry)
- Tuesdays – Deep House with Guest DJs (free entry)
- Wednesdays – Glitch Wednesdays with DJ Oum & Guests (free entry – house, techno, electro)
- Thursdays – Music People (200 THB entry including 1 drink – house, techno, electro)
If you love your house music and want to see what Bangkok has to offer in terms of real underground music then Glow is a good place to start. It’s also a good place to go if you just fancy a good hassle-free night out. You are heading to the islands, and in particular the Koh Phangan rave in Haad Rin, you might find Glow plays better music than you thought at first.
